A Day Of Possibilities With Deloitte Employees At Rose Mary School In Malwani Slums
Bringing a world of endless possibilities to young children is a gift that has the potential to grow into the most beautiful things. When the employees of Deloitte Mumbai, decided to give this gift – “Day Of Possibilities” to the children of Rose Mary English High School, we were thrilled!
It was an early morning for all the volunteers and us, as we gathered in the school nestled amidst the Malwani slums in Mumbai. While we took in the surroundings and the ambiance of the school, we were amazed by the positive vibes this school emanated in the middle of the chaos!
Wave Of Excited Volunteers
The students were quick to arrive in their red and blue uniforms and settle in, a bit curious about the 50+ ‘bhaiyyas‘ and ‘didis‘ (brothers and sisters) walking along the corridors! While the morning prayer kicked in, Team KnowYourStar took the opportunity to brief the Deloitte volunteers about how the next 2 hours were going to look like. During that, we discussed the previously shared brief skeleton of the “Day Of Possibilities” program in detail and had a quick Q&A session. While a lot of things were discussed, we ended it with one important instruction – “Don’t forget to have a lot of fun!!!”
The volunteers were grouped into 5 teams, who spread themselves into 5 classes from 5th to 10th grade and got started on a meaningful adventure! The students were excited and the energy was very positive as Subhankar (Teach For India School Leader) introduced everyone to the students and explained the purpose of this program.
Interaction With Curious Students
The volunteers interacted with all the students for two good hours. They explored the lengths and breadths of career possibilities available for each one of us in this big wide world. Furthermore, they shared information about different professions from the Know Your Star Book of Possibilities. During the session, the volunteers answered a lot of questions that the students had for them. This helped the students to get a brief idea on how they can open themselves up to these possibilities. It helped them realize how they can learn to identify and start building skill sets for the professions that they are eager to pursue!
All of this happened through interactive and gamified sessions; the squeals of joy, loud laughter, and never-ending claps were proof! By the end of 2 hours, both the volunteers and the students had gelled up really well. So much that there were volunteers asking our team how they can continue engaging with the school and take this program a step further! At the same time, there were students asking us when we would be coming back with more information for them!
