Thursday Email – We Had A Colorful, Beautiful Week, How About You?

Namaste!

On behalf of everyone at KnowYourStar, I wish you all a very happy, but a belated Holi. We hope you all had a very colorful week, for team KYS definitely had one 🙂

This week, Team KYS got an opportunity to meet the radiant Sheetal, whose Bhav Yatra stories were so magical, we just listened with awe! We took her to Vindhya, where we met the lovely Pavithra Ma’am, the dashing Ashok Sir, and the wise Bala Sir. It was such a positive gathering, with so many stories exchanged. Nandini and Pranita were all ears, just happy to be a part of the little March gathering! Soon it was time to take leave, and we couldn’t do that without a selfie in front of Pavithra Ma’am’s wall of fame, which Sheetal suggested would soon require a hall, instead of a wall, and we couldn’t agree more!

Moving on, a heart-moving moment last week, where the entire team of KYS was speechless, was when Ghatam Suresh Ji, whom we interviewed a few months back as a part of the India Inclusion Summit, forwarded an excerpt from an email that he received from his new student from South Africa! (We don’t want to reveal the name of the student since we haven’t gotten in touch with him yet!) It read and we quote –

“I came across a very interesting article on you today. And this has motivated me even more to becoming my countries (South Africa ) first professional Ghatam artist. I never knew that you battled Polio and have overcome such obstacles In your way, Likewise I have never told you that I have a Spinal deficiency(My L3 & C5 $ C4 Disc have basically herniated and are no longer functional) this creates regular pain in my back which sometimes renders me immobile for a few days – but I now believe that this is merely my mind creating this pain, and now believe that like my guru who has overcome these obstacles, I can do so as well.”

We have always hoped that even if one person is moved by a story that we publish, the effort is worth it. When we read these words in print, our joy knew no bounds. This Thursday, we want to thank you all for supporting us to continue doing what we do!

Last, but not the least, we will take your leave this week, by sharing with you another beautiful story. Wanting to give the community of transgenders a platform and space to demonstrate their unique identity – and help them break down the stagnant stereotypes that have long been associated with them, Poornima Sukumar started the Aravani Art Project.

The idea is to use (mainly) visual arts to involve the Aravanis in the process of creativity and equip them with the artistic tools required to express their stories of freedom, their dreams of acceptance, and their hopes of being on par with the society they live in. Do give this a read to know more about these beautiful less-talked-about humans. A couple of months back, Yatish wrote a Friday Letter to Poornima, based on his experience of being part of one of the events organised by Aravani Art Project, which is also worth a read!
