Thursday Email – We Are Not Here To Teach, We Are All Here To Learn :)

Namaste!

“Don’t worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.” – Robert Fulghum

This quote came to life for us at Volunesia last Saturday at Brindavan Tent School. We dedicated our Volunesia circle to creating beautiful dustbins out of used carton boxes and other waste materials to teach the students the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. After our circle, the volunteers were cleaning up the raw materials. What was heartwarming was when some students collected the waste papers lying in the classroom and put it into the newly created dustbins without us asking them to, when we weren’t even watching! It’s amazing how kids watch and learn the smallest of things from us. 🙂

While we rejoiced at the learnings the students had managed to grasp, we were amazed to hear the volunteers share their learnings when we sat in a circle after our time with the kids!

Manas Manohar shared with us that while he was working on the dustbin in a group with 5-6 kids, the kids wanted to stick some cut-out stars and hearts on it. So he started hunting for glue so he can help them, but he was amazed when he returned to see a kid using thick paint as an alternative to glue and sticking them on effortlessly. This was an AHA moment for all of us. Sheer brilliance! We were convinced that we are not here to teach, but we are all here to learn! 🙂

Lastly, we cannot end this email without thanking you for your never-ending support! Since our last week’s email to you regarding sponsoring a kid from this school for INR 1400, we have raised money to sponsor 10 kids out of the total 40! Team KYS is extremely grateful for being a part of this wonderful ecosystem. 🙂
